The Pope’s decision came at the end of an audience with the new Prefect (minister) of the Ministry of Economy, the Spanish Maximino Caballero on February 13, in which he asked “that more resources be assigned and reserved for the Apostolic See, also increasing income from the management of real estate assets”.
In a document published by the website Messainlatino.it. and that circulates internally in the Vatican, it appears that the pope decided “to suppress free and advantageous accommodation for cardinals, heads of dicasteries, presidents, secretaries, undersecretaries, executives, auditors and the like, of the Court of Broken Rome, from the buildings owned by the curial Institutions and the bodies that refer to the Holy See”.
The document also states that the ownership bodies (of the real estate) “must apply to the aforementioned subjects the same prices applicable to those who do not have an office in the Holy See or in the State of Vatican City.”

On the other hand, it specifies the need to pay, according to existing rates, accommodation in the “Domus Santa Marta”, the residence inside the Vatican where the pope lives and that many prelates, but also visitors, use as a hotel sometimes without paying.
The document specifies that the contracts currently stipulated will continue until their expiration and then the new rents will be applied.
Likewise, the Pope has established that any derogation from this regulation will have to be directly authorized by him.
In addition, Francisco has decided to eliminate the “contributions for housing”, supplements that are paid to face the rent.
