Madrid, Feb 27 (EFE).- Thirteen autonomous communities are on alert, with the Balearic Islands in red, due to extreme risk, due to heavy snowfall from very low levels, cold, wind, rain and maritime storms, especially in the northern half of the peninsula and the northern Mediterranean strip, where there will be waves of up to 8 meters.
The Balearic Islands were under orange warning early this morning, although they will go red shortly, and are under warning due to extreme risk in the next few hours, given the forecast of especially heavy snowfall in the Tramontana mountains in Mallorca, with possible accumulations of 40 centimeters in 24 hours from heights of 400 meters and temporarily from 200.
Minimum temperatures of -2 degrees, gusts of 90 kilometers per hour and maritime storms on the islands of Mallorca and Menorca with waves of 6 to 8 meters are also expected in the Balearic community.
In addition, there will be rain that will accumulate up to 60 liters per square meter in 12 hours, according to the predictions of the State Meteorological Agency (Aemet), on its website.
On the other hand, Cantabria and Catalonia are under orange warning throughout the day, according to Aemet’s predictions.
In the Cantabrian community, snowfalls of 6 centimeters thick are expected in 24 hours from heights of 500-600 meters and it is under warning today and tomorrow, and it will also be very cold, with temperatures of up to -6 degrees.
For its part, in the Catalan community, temperatures of up to -10 degrees are expected today in the pre-Pyrenees of Barcelona and in the Pyrenees in Gerona and the Aran Valley in Lleida.
Coastal phenomena are also expected in areas such as Ampurdán (Girona) and waves of up to 5 meters on the coast, as well as snowfall up to 5 centimeters thick in 24 hours from any level in the Aran Valley and maximum gusts of wind of 80 kilometers per hour.
During the first hours of the day, the communities of Aragón, both Castillas, Madrid and Navarra are also kept under orange alert with significant risk due to cold, wind and snowfall, although in these regions the situation will ease as the day progresses.
On the other hand, the communities of Asturias, Galicia, the Basque Country, La Rioja, the Valencian Community and the autonomous city of Melilla are also under warning for these same inclement weather conditions, although in yellow, with a slightly lower risk than the previous one.
