Las Palmas De Gran Canaria (EFE) activities, denies the corruption charges against him, reiterates that he has a clear conscience and affirms that he is “a victim”.
This was stated in an interview published this Monday by the newspapers “La Provincia” and “El Día”, in which he admits to having met the intermediary who gives his name to this investigation in 2019, when he was general director of Livestock of the Canary Islands Government, already that Marco Antonio Navarro Tacoronte went to visit him at his office together with a businessman from Tenerife dedicated to renewables to ask him if the farmers would be interested in installing photovoltaic energy.
Already being a deputy in Congress, Navarro Tacoronte again asked him the same question from another businessman specializing in renewable energy, Antonio Bautista, arrested in this case and whom the socialist qualifies as “a serious person, without fault.”
Fuentes Curbelo explains that this consultation was pertinent, not because he had been general director of Livestock for the Canary Islands Government, but because he is a professional farmer and knows almost all the businessmen in the sector on his native island, Fuerteventura, although he assures that neither Navarro nor Bautista proposed “absolutely no type of business, nor intermediation, nor anything.”
“He did not have any type of connection with the Government of the Canary Islands. And in the Congress of Deputies, as you will understand, there is legislation. There is no intermediation for commercial operations or anything like that”, he affirms in the interview in which he recalls that his work in the Upper House “consisted of fiscal issues, of the Treasury”, because “he was a member of the Treasury Commission, deputy spokesman and member of the Industry, Commerce and Tourism Commission”.
Fuentes Curbelo categorically denies that he has offered to obtain subsidies and favors or reduce sanctions, as stated in the summary of this case, and also that he knows the only person who remains imprisoned for this plot, the retired general of the Civil Guard Francis Espinosa.
“How can there be a criminal plot or organization in which the supposed ringleader, who according to the Police is me, does not know the Civil Guard general who they say is second in command? In no part of the proceedings is there any reference or proof that I know the civil guard; What’s more, during my interrogation neither the prosecutor nor the judge asked me anything about it. In his statement, the civil guard stated that he did not know me at all, ”he says.
The former socialist parliamentarian also says that “it is categorically false that a ‘tour’ was organized with businessmen, as it is intended to show in the press, that it began in Congress, continued with feasts and ended in nightclubs” or that he has asked “a no businessman of those who appear in the summary who contributes money to the soccer club of his town, Tetir”, of which he is president.
Regarding the photos that have been disseminated and in which he appears with the alleged mediator, Antonio Navarro, in a hostess club, Fuentes Curbelo affirms that “that is what he says” and denies having “gone to any kind of party.”
“I know the people, but I haven’t been to any kind of party. I don’t know what Mr. Tacoronte is trying to do. Whether to be saved, or I don’t know. What I know is that my family, my wife, my children, my grandchildren are going through, especially them, they are going through a rather delicate and difficult situation to bear being the talk of the whole world. The damage that has been done to my family is priceless. It is an issue that will take a long time to heal and be forgotten. I do not recognize all the photos that have appeared in the press, but, in any case, they do not prove the commission of anything illegal, ”he asserts.
The former parliamentarian also stresses that these photos affect the sphere of his constitutional right to privacy and warns that “if something were to be deduced from those photos, it would be illegal evidence.”
At the same time, he regrets that his party colleagues have turned their backs on him and have not contacted him in recent days, after his arrest, and names among them the general secretary of the PSOE in Fuerteventura, Blas Acosta, whom he remembers that he supported when he was prosecuted in another case that was filed.
