Las Palmas de Gran Canaria (EFE).- The Carnival of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria has crowned its four-legged queen this Sunday: the giant poodle Chanel, who has been the star of the dance floor at parties, inspired by Studio 54, with the most disco proposal of the contest.
Chanel, 6 years old, is a dog with a star, which in this 2023 edition has confirmed her triplet, since she has won first prize for the third consecutive year at the Canine Carnival of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria.
As its owner, Felicia Svensson, has confessed, Chanel is “the most carnival-like in the house” and this year she has triumphed again with her fantasy ‘Platinium’ that has brought the essence of the New York disco to Parque Santa Catalina on a day at the that the city has celebrated their love and respect for animals.
She could not miss her appointment, Felicia Svensson has declared, “it is listening to the music and going crazy wanting to show off”, today with a headdress, float and a costume worthy of the Queen of the Dog Carnival.
With feathers, glitter and lots of silver, Chanel and Felicia Svensson swept the stage, turned into a nightclub, with the most daring and detailed outfit.
“More than 250 hours of work” have been dedicated to this fantasy, has confessed its designer and owner, who has dedicated the title to her family, who supports her every year and who has allowed her to escape for a few hours changing her work shift to be able to shine in a crowded Santa Catalina Park.
The most awarded dog of the Canine Carnival has won 100 kilos of feed.
Chanel has lived with Felicia Svensson’s family since she was born, the designer has assured.
“I raised her, since she was born” and, although she has a brother, “she is the carnival girl” and the inspiration that puts the Svensson family to sewing every year.
Accompanying Chanel on the podium of the Studio 54 Canine Carnival is the mixed-race Labrador retriever “Mía”, with a design by Alicia Ortiz and Natalia Santos and the fantasy ‘Sing, sing, my guitar enchants!’.
Mia, four years old, has squandered her musical self-confidence with Liliana Vera on the stage of Parque Santa Catalina, with tights, pink ruffles, kicked glitter, a top hat and even a guitar.
Mía has put on her best clothes to enter the New York nightclub, with a fantasy that has conquered the jury and the public, who have given her the second position and a prize of 70 kilos of food to recharge forces for the next edition.
Third place went to “Teddy”, a three-year-old mestizo carnival fan who fulfilled the promise that his fantasy brought forward: ‘We bring rhythm to Carnival’, a design by Vicente Macías.
He has defended his proposal with Ana María Alonso, both dressed in the purest comparsero style in yellows and violets and a large display of ruffles.
The jury, formed, among others, by several members of comparsas, could not resist the style of “Teddy”, who has worn a high-tailored design, a burst of color that has filled the stage despite its small size.
Posing masterfully in front of the photographers, “Teddy” has won the park’s heart to the rhythm of maracas and a lot of them are Latino.
The Canine Carnival is one of the funniest and most endearing events of the festival in the capital of Gran Canaria, a family event that includes all members of the household, and a special day for the dog members.
With the Parque Santa Catalina experiencing the party on a sunny Sunday, this day has registered an absolute full house, which has been noted with warm applause along with the master of ceremonies, “Baby Solano”.
As every year, the Canine Carnival has enlivened the complicated deliberation of the jury by inviting all the canine carnival-goers to walk around the stage of the Santa Catalina Park with their designs and their family.
Dragons have paraded, butterflies have flown, dogs of large and small sizes, with rock and hippie canine models, television stars and even a bride ready to marry with all her bridal display and limitless creativity.
There was no shortage of wigs and glitter for the dogs too, because they have been the stars of the day and have shown that Las Palmas de Gran Canaria adores and respects all pets.
The collective photo of the dogs in costumes and their owners has exceeded all expectations, since it is a family that grows by leaps and bounds in each edition.
The Canine Carnival gala has inaugurated a holiday for the little ones, with music, children’s shows, the great children’s parade and Chirimurgas Night in the final stretch of the Las Palmas de Gran Canaria Carnival, which will celebrate its 25th anniversary this Friday of the Drag Queen Gala, one of the most anticipated events.
