Kiev (EFE).- Ukraine commemorates this Friday the first anniversary of the beginning of the Russian invasion, on a day in which the president, Volodímir Zelenski, is scheduled to address a nation profoundly changed by a year of war.
Already on the eve of the anniversary, Zelenski had shared on his Telegram account images of the conflict that, as he wrote, “leave deep scars on the heart and soul.”
“We have overcome many ordeals and we will prevail,” added the Ukrainian leader, at the end of a week in which he has received visits from heads of state such as the American Joe Biden, the Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni and the President of the Spanish Government Pedro Sánchez.
They all traveled to the Ukrainian capital to reaffirm the Western commitment to defending against the Russian invasion, which they underlined with the announcement of new aid, such as the shipment of up to 10 Leopard 2 type tanks by Spain.
Events throughout Europe
But the anniversary will not only be remembered in Kiev and Zelenski is expected to speak via videoconference at various events scheduled for this occasion in various European capitals -as well as at the virtual meeting of heads of government of the G7 club of industrialized nations-.
Ukrainian flags will be flown in numerous official buildings throughout the continent this Friday, to which citizen initiatives will be added, such as the marches called in rejection of the invasion in cities such as Riga and Warsaw, and artistic ones, such as the installation of a tank destroyed by the Ukrainian forces in front of the Russian Embassy in Berlin.
For their part, the President of the European Commission (EC), Ursula von der Leyen, and the Secretary General of NATO, Jens Stoltenberg, will attend today in the Estonian capital of Tallinn the events to mark the 105th anniversary of the founding of the baltic republic
There it is expected that they will also pronounce on the situation in Ukraine in a joint press conference with the Estonian president and prime minister.
