Logroño, (EFE).- A black and white portrait of the boxer Gazi Jalidov, by photographer Sergio Espinosa, has been chosen by the jury as the winning work of the tenth La Rioja photojournalism contest, whose prizes have been announced this Thursday.
The winners of the contest have been revealed in an act in which the president of the Parliament of La Rioja, Jesús María García, and several of the sponsors of the contest and members of the jury, among them the photojournalist Sofía Moro, have participated.
The winning photograph has the title “Do not let your guard down” and in it Sergio Espinosa -who will receive a thousand euros for it- has shown the image of this boxer highlighting details of his muscular torso and neck, with his arms crossed, with some boxing gloves hanging from the neck.
The image of the boxer from La Rioja, Olympic diploma in Tokyo 2021, illustrated a series of photographs about the best athletes of that year, prizes that were awarded in 2022 and that is why he has been able to attend this annual contest.
Espinosa has detailed that the image of the winner is part of a series on athletes from La Rioja, on the occasion of the 2021 La Rioja Sports Gala; With this photograph he tried to reflect “he is the effort that boxing represents and all the work that is in his body” in addition to the fact that “he has a lost look as a sign of the future” alluding to his youth.
A photograph of the celebration of the Soccer World Championship won by Argentina, by Justo Rodríguez, has been chosen for the second prize; and another from the Plaza de Haro dyed in color at the local festivities, by Íngrid Fernández, has been the third prize.
The award was attended by 92 photographs by 12 photographers who captured the news of La Rioja during the past year; In a first selection, 23 images were chosen and among them the jury has selected the three winners, who will receive 1,750 euros between all of them.
The president of the Association of Graphic Reporters of La Rioja, Fernando Díaz, has highlighted the quality of the jury that has awarded the award, with professionals like Marisa Flórez “who has just been part of the Ortega y Gasset jury, the main photojournalism award from Spain”. EFE
