Seville, (EFE).- Andalusian town halls have observed this Friday five minutes of silence on the first anniversary of the Russian invasion of Ukraine and the outbreak of the war, in an initiative promoted by the Spanish Federation of Municipalities and Provinces (FEMP ).
In Seville, at the gates of the consistory, at 12:00 noon, members of the municipal corporation and Ukrainian refugees who have established the capital of Andalusia as their residence have observed five minutes of silence and have read a manifesto in which they have called for “the end of the war” and “peace” for a country that continues to suffer the consequences of the conflict.
One of those refugees is Svitlana, who arrived in the Seville capital on a trip organized by the Santa Marta brotherhood with her three children, aged six, ten and eleven, leaving behind her parents and sister, who are still in Ukraine.
In statements to journalists, Svitlana thanked in almost perfect Spanish for the welcome from the Spanish, who are “very good people” and indicated that the first word she learned in Spanish was “thank you”.
End of the war
Svitlana has called for “peace” for Ukraine and “all countries” and for “no more people to die”, while expressing her wish to be able to return to her country and be reunited with her relatives.
Irina, another of the Ukrainian refugees who lives in Seville, has recounted the harshness of a war that is touching her very closely despite the distance.
“My son’s godfather is on the front lines of the war and is admitted to the hospital, wounded but alive,” he recounted.
He has also pointed out that one of the main inconveniences they encounter in their daily lives are the “coverage problems” that prevent them from communicating in a normal way with the relatives they have left in their native country.
In Malaga, at the gates of the Town Hall, councilors and refugees have also gathered in a rally “in solidarity with the Ukrainian population and its millions of displaced persons” as well as to demand “the end of the war”, in what has been the general tone of what happened in the majority of Andalusian municipalities before the war in Ukraine.
