Madrid (EFE).- Eleven autonomous communities in the center and north of the peninsula are already on alert due to the forecast of snowfall at low levels and due to the intense cold brought by the polar air mass that has penetrated the peninsula.
The warnings of the State Meteorological Agency (AEMET) are of orange level (significant risk) in the communities of Aragón, Cantabria, Castilla y León, Castilla-La Mancha, Catalonia, Navarra, the Basque Country and La Rioja, and of level ” yellow” (risk) in Asturias, Galicia, Madrid.
The forecasts of the Meteorological Agency announce that rainfall will be strong and persistent in the Cantabrian area, that snowfalls will occur in mountainous areas of the northern half of the peninsula, and that temperatures will drop also in a remarkable way.
Snow alerts have been activated in the eleven autonomous communities, and in Cantabria the Aemet forecasts also indicate that very significant rains will be recorded, with accumulations of up to 40 liters per square meter in twelve hours.
The snowfalls will affect these eleven autonomous communities at levels above 500 meters above sea level, although the most important accumulations will be reached at higher levels.
The polar air mass that has penetrated the peninsula will cause a notable drop in temperatures, and thermometers will drop to -10 degrees in many places in the center and northern half of the peninsula.
Caution due to snow on the Meseta highway in Cantabria
The General Directorate of Traffic recommends caution when driving on the Meseta highway (A-67) in Cantabria due to the snow that has been falling since tonight, which keeps the port of Lunada (CA-643) closed to traffic, although in seven autonomous roads, the use of chains is now necessary.
On its website, Tráfico also establishes the prohibition of the circulation of trucks and articulated vehicles on the highway of the port of San Glorio, the national 621 that connects Cantabria with León, from the Lebanese town of Vejo, as well as on N-629, which connects the autonomous community with Burgos through the port of Los Tornos.
