Barcelona (EFE) nominees”.
After more than 40 years on stage and after saying goodbye three months ago as a theater company, Paco Mir, Carles Sans and Joan Gràcia received “this news” enthusiastically, with “goosebumps” and, as they explained in an interview with EFE, with the conviction that, after his entire career, “he was already playing”.
The prize has been awarded to them for “their splendid and prolific career, full of successes, reaching a prominent place in the history of performing arts; for creating a scenic language and its own label, of a universal nature; for his mastery and genius in the art of mime, and for ennobling and elevating both comedy and gestural theater, and making millions of viewers around the world laugh.”
They assure that this award, which will be presented to them at the Max Awards ceremony on April 17 at the Gran Teatro Falla in Cádiz, marks “the intermission” of their careers, since “until now we have been Tricicle, and now we will be individuals who had been Tricicle and who are dedicated to other projects”.
In this sense, they have explained that, professionally, they continue to enjoy it, since Sans is on tour with his show “Finally alone!”, a monologue in which he tells experiences and anecdotes from his time at Tricicle, while Mir defines himself as “comediographer, director and producer” of various projects, and Gràcia holds the position of artistic director of one of the great cabarets in Spain.
The obsession to innovate
With only 5 performances of his latest show “Hits-Chimpum!” at the Gran Teatre del Liceu with all the tickets sold, the three comedians finally said goodbye to the public on December 4 because “we have an obsession with innovation, and we were at a point where it was difficult to find new themes for the shows”, Gràcia explained.
“We didn’t want to end up in decrepitude”, added Sans, to which his partner Mir recalled that “other companies and artists, over time, have seen their audience decrease”.
In any case, they have clarified that this has not been their case, since since its beginnings in 1979, they have noticed “the interest of the public”, also in their last stop at the Liceu, which was “epic and wonderful because people only I wanted to enjoy ”, recalled Sans.
But deciding to definitely lower the curtain for Tricicle was not an easy decision, because it meant “abandoning customs and theatrical circuits that make you coincide with great friends”, said Gràcia, who at the same time exclaimed that she does not know what it is not to work the weekends.
43 years of humor
With a professional career that includes a performance at the Barcelona Olympic Games, the celebration of its 25th anniversary at the Palau Sant Jordi in front of 15,000 spectators and a long list of theatrical successes -Manicomic, Exit, Slastic, Sit, Bits…- the three comedians have declared that “we have always had our attention focused on the public, which is what feeds us”.
They recall when they took their first steps, “in the midst of the gestural current that was experienced in the 70s with references such as the Comediants collective”, when they performed in the street and “the big businessmen questioned if we were funny”, recalled Gràcia.
A long trajectory in which “we have done everything we have set out to do”, they say, although they acknowledge that they have left a “thorn”: “If we are so good and great, how is it that no one takes advantage of our skills to make us work in public theaters?
Tricicle believes that humor should be promoted because “laughing is such a great need that people are capable of paying to sit in an armchair to be made to laugh”, Sans exemplified.
Regarding the current debate about the limits of humor, comedians are convinced that they have always been “politically correct”, although they have never censored themselves, and they agree that “we have simply made humor out of what, as spectators, we It would have made me laugh.”
The pandemic managed to slow down their farewell, which they had already announced in 2018, but now, Tricicle has ruled that only two reasons could delay it once again: “longing would have to drive us completely crazy, or that, suddenly, Broadway claims us ”.
