Berlin (EFE) can talk”, his latest film.
Saura is a figure “to be celebrated, not to say goodbye to,” said the president of the EFA and Polish director Agnieskza Holland, in the presence of the son of the late filmmaker, Antonio Saura.
Holland’s “Carlos will always be with us” was followed by a speech by German director Volkor Schlöndorff, who recalled the role played by Saura’s cinema in the face of the Franco dictatorship and his later films around flamenco, such as “Carmen”.
Schlöndorff, Oscar in 1980 with “The Tin Drum”, also wondered aloud “Why are you leaving?”, the song from the movie “Cría cuervos”, and reflected on two criteria that, in his opinion, represent to Saura: innovative and political cinema, “differentiated from the politically correct”, he added.
The act was presented by the artistic director of the Berlinale, Carlo Chatrian, who for his part recalled several of the films with which Saura attended the festival’s competition, such as “La Caza” -Silver Bear for Best Director, in 1966- and “Quick, quick”, Gold winner in 1981.
The tribute to Carlos Saura, who in 2004 received the prize for his entire career from the European Academy, was included in the Berlinale program following his death.
