Málaga, (EFE).- Antonio Banderas is speaking with “important people on Broadway” to stage a musical in English about Pablo Picasso, which he hopes “will end up being a reality”, and has announced that, if it materializes, the world premiere would be held at the Teatro del Soho in Malaga.
“There is a project related to Picasso, but I can’t say more,” Banderas, who presented the concerts of the Soho Pop Symphony Orchestra on Tuesday, said when asked by journalists.
If Banderas’ project for the musical about Picasso came true, “it would be a milestone”, because it would premiere in Malaga “with the original company that would go to Broadway”, and “it would be unusual for an American company to present it in Spain”.
He is also “closing the rights” for a new musical in Soho, for a title that is “among the pillars of American musical theater” and for which negotiation is “very advanced”.
An extraordinary balance of “Company”
Banderas assures that “it will surprise”, because “nobody would dare to do it in Spain”, just like the last one he starred in, “Company”, it was also “a very risky bet that has turned out well”.
On “Company”, he makes an “extraordinary” balance of what he has described as a “tour through the provinces in Madrid”, with almost 60,000 spectators and an average of 758 per performance, “competing with seventeen musicals in Madrid, twelve of them for children and most of them during the Christmas period”.
There have been almost 240 performances of the musical in Madrid, of which he has participated in 184, and in which they have “deconstructed Sondheim to rebuild it in another way.”
Touring other cities with “Company” is “impossible”, because “the installation alone is almost half a million euros, with its revolving stage”, to which are added an orchestra with twenty-six musicians and a cast of “big stars They had never met and will not meet again.
Regarding Sohrlin, the new stage space that he is creating in Malaga, he has indicated that it continues to progress, “practically everything that is the technical school is done” and they hope to be “in September or October in a position to open the space”.
Tiny Job at Indiana Jones
He has specified that they want to “build black boxes with different capacities” at the Sohrlin facilities and a space dedicated to music with a capacity “close to a thousand locations.”
His most imminent project will take him to Almería, where the American musical film “Road to Bethlehem” is being shot, in which he plays Herod, and he has other films on the horizon, but he cannot “talk about them” because they have not yet been signed. .
He has congratulated himself on the success of the latest installment of “Puss in Boots”, which has “exceeded” expectations and on which he has highlighted that all the dubbing work, both in English and Spanish, was very Malaga, because He did it in a small sound studio located in front of his Soho Theater.
Another of his latest works is a “very small character, almost a cameo”, in the new film in the Indiana Jones saga, whose filming was delayed due to the accident suffered by its protagonist, Harrison Ford, which forced him to interrupt the rehearsals and even performances of the musical “Company”.
He was offered this role because of his good relationship with Steven Spielberg after producing the two “Zorro” films, and despite being a small role, he is happy to be “around Harrison Ford and Phoebe Waller-Bridge, an actress wonderful” with whom he has “got on a lot”. EFE
