Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, Feb 20 (EFE).- The UE-GOIA Unit of the Las Palmas de Gran Canaria Local Police has reinforced its equipment with five new vehicles, and has proceeded to the comprehensive modernization of the vans and material defense, which places this body “at the forefront of the entire Canary Islands”, according to its mayor, Augusto Hidalgo.
This was stated by the mayor of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, Augusto Hidalgo, at a press conference in which he reported that these acquisitions comply with the Royal Decree on Security and “improving operating conditions and for acting in emergency situations”.
In this way, Las Palmas de Gran Canaria has “the only police force in the Canary Islands that complies with the new regulations” in order to “be able to act in situations of tumult or in extreme situations”, he stated.
The GOIA “are the ones who normally work at night, in the most complex and extreme situations, and must be prepared to mitigate conflict situations and be able to act with maximum security for themselves and for the person who is being intervened,” he said. .
It has also advanced that it will continue “with another selection process”, which is added to the acquisition of “the best instruments and vehicles to be able to act on a day-to-day basis and to be able to continue having a safe city as we have”.
The Councilor for Security, Josué Íñiguez, has ensured that “a huge amount of material is incorporated to intervene in the most difficult situations”, although “luckily the material becomes old without using it, because we are in a very safe city where the incidents are practically non-existent.
With this material, he said, “we guarantee an intervention that is safe for the agent and also for the person who is being operated on.”
As the mayor has pointed out, “the entire fleet of the Local Police is going to be renewed” with “the largest and best-equipped police force in the entire Canary Islands.”
The Local Police has incorporated, from September until now, a total of 48 new vehicles with an investment of 2.6 million euros.
In this sense, Íñiguez recalled that this action “is part of the renewal and modernization of the fleet, one of the objectives of this mandate” since “many of the previous ones were more than ten years old.”
The new acquisitions are added to the comprehensive modernization of three intervention vans, with the installation of modular furniture for the orderly and safe transport of the technical means of this Unit, and a separation grid between the van’s warehouse and the area of passengers, and new signage.
In detail, five new SEAT Ateca model radio patrol intervention vehicles have been acquired, equipped with all the special equipment, five containment shields and four riot shields; 75 riot defenses and 30 riot guards.
The City Council of the capital has allocated more than 285,000 euros to modernize the means of this unit in an endowment that will improve police work in situations of risk, events of magnitude, in the control of drug trafficking, mass control and public order, interventions in massive cultural, musical and sporting events, among others.
The vehicles, black in color and with the unit’s lettering, include a kit for detainees (partition), a rigid desk-type tray with a storage drawer that in turn is used as a support to transport two riot helmets and also provides for the installation of supports for the safe transport of two anti-riot defenses and two anti-riot shields.
In addition, each unit has beacon tape, traffic signaling cones, flashlights with battery and charger, fire extinguisher, first-aid kit, and fireproof blanket and gloves, among other supplies.EFE
