Mexico City (EFE).- The Mexican president, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, refused on Friday to hand over the presidency of the Pacific Alliance to Peru, as it should be, considering that the government of Dina Boluarte is “spurious.”
“I am going to instruct the Ministry of Foreign Relations (SRE) to notify the members of the Rio Group what we are doing, because I do not want to hand over (the presidency) to a government that I consider spurious. Let the members of the group decide, ”he said at his daily press conference.
Once the opinion of the Rio Group, a permanent consultation mechanism made up of Argentina, Brazil, Colombia, Mexico, Panama, Peru, Uruguay and Venezuela, has been obtained, López Obrador indicated that he will abide by the corresponding decision.
“If they say we hand over the presidency, we do it. But I am going to make the consultation, I do not want to legitimize a coup d’état, it is contrary to freedoms, human rights and it is anti-democratic ”, he stressed.
Boluarte addressed the issue last Wednesday, when he commented that López Obrador did not want to hand over the presidency to him because he “continues to support former president” Pedro Castillo.
“In January of this year, Peru should have assumed the pro tempore presidency. However, due to this political situation of the President of Mexico, until now he is harming the peoples that comprise the Pacific Alliance because (…) he does not want to hand over the pro tempore presidency of the Pacific Alliance to us,” Boluarte said in a statement without questions.
Tension between Mexico and Peru since the dismissal of Castillo
Initially, Mexico was supposed to hand over the pro tempore presidency to Lima at the Pacific Alliance Summit scheduled for Mexico in November, but it was suspended because the Peruvian Congress did not allow then-President Castillo to leave the country.
Despite the fact that the Summit was postponed and moved to the Peruvian capital for December, weeks later Congress dismissed Castillo, who was imprisoned after carrying out a failed self-coup.
López Obrador has since aligned himself with the former Andean president, granting asylum to his wife and children and denouncing that it was a coup against him orchestrated by the oligarchy.
“They put him in jail, there are no legal grounds, and what is in the background is a classist, racist attitude. Since he is a humble teacher from the mountains, he was harassed by Congress from the beginning, ”he said this Friday.
