Madrid (EFE).- In Spain there were 329,812 births last year, which represents a new minimum in the 81 years of this statistic collected by the INE and an average of only 903 births per day, 79 less than on each day of 2019 -before the pandemic and the first year in which that average dropped below a thousand-.
These data from the National Institute of Statistics (INE) confirm that the number of births continues to decline in the country as a whole, with a reduction of 2.08% compared to 2021, which is almost four times higher, 8.07%. , compared to 2019.
Only Madrid was saved from that fall last year, with 1.68% more births; Castilla y León, with 0.77% more; Asturias, 0.52% more; and the Valencian Community, 0.36% more.
On the contrary, the greatest decreases were registered in Castilla-La Mancha (-7.44%), Navarra (-6.80%) and the Canary Islands (-5.38%).
More deaths than births in Spain
In addition, the 329,812 births are 132,558 fewer than the 462,370 deaths that, also according to INE data, occurred last year in Spain.
A negative difference that occurred in all communities except Madrid, with 2,136 more births than deaths; and Murcia, with 318; in addition to Melilla (377) and Ceuta (96).
The greatest difference was reached in Galicia (with 20,389 more deaths than births) and Castilla y León (18,420), ahead of more populated territories such as Andalusia (16,079), the Valencian Community (14,612) and Catalonia (14,154).
In the case of deaths, which were 3.26% more than in 2021 and 11.44% more than in 2019, they increased in all communities, with Cantabria well ahead of all the others (16.79% which multiplies the national average by five), followed by Cantabria, Castilla y León and the Canary Islands.
Only the autonomous cities of Ceuta and Melilla recorded fewer deaths than in 2021, 10.09 and 20.03%, respectively.
