Santiago de Compostela (EFE).- Several tens of thousands of people have collapsed in Santiago this Sunday to protest against the health policy of the Xunta and defend public health and primary care, in a mobilization called by the SOS Sanidade Pública platform and supported by institutions, parties, unions and entities from all over Galicia.
The mobilization began at noon in the Alameda and ended in the Plaza del Obradoiro, whose 7,700 square meters were filled and prevented access to all attendees, more than 50,000 according to the organization and 22,000 for the Local Police.
It was celebrated behind the banner «In defense and improvement of public health. We want our primary attention» from SOS Sanidade Pública and, a second motto supported by political representatives, which declared «In defense of public health. Let’s save primary care».
“Disability and privatization”
The spokesman for the SOS Sanidade Pública platform, Manuel Martín, has expressed that the objective is to cry out against the “impossible mix of incapacity and privatizing intention” of the Xunta in health matters.
“The population has to understand that to change health policy in a government absolutely closed to any change, it is still necessary to change policies and change politicians,” he argued.
His entity has presented a popular legislative initiative, with more than 50,000 support signatures, which seeks to change the primary care model.
BNG, PSdeG and Podemos, present in the mobilization
The national spokesperson for the BNG, Ana Pontón, has affirmed that, in the mobilization, “a citizenry with a conscience is emerging that is stopping the Popular Party’s feet” in health matters.
«The Popular Party has to listen, it cannot continue riding on pride, riding on lies and insulting and attacking the public, which is doing what the Government does not do, which is defending the public health of this country. A government that was right and had a heart today would listen to what thousands and thousands of Galicians are saying in a cry that unites us with the majority of this country”, he declared.
The leader of the PSdeG, Valentín González Formoso, has assured that with the demonstration, Galicia «explains» to the Xunta its opinion on a health policy that goes «from occurrence to occurrence and patch after patch».
«Today, Galician society, is going to explain to you here, in the capital of Galicia, what it thinks of this commitment to deterioration, this commitment to devaluation and this commitment to the privatization of what Galician men and women want the most. , which is the health system, that pillar in the welfare state and in its life system, “he added.
The spokesman for Podemos Galicia, Borja San Ramón, has lamented the increase in waiting times in public health and added that today it has become clear that “there is a political alternative” to the Xunta model.
The manifesto has denounced the “budget cuts, applied by the successive governments of the Popular Party” and the trend towards the “privatization” of services.
The mobilization has included slogans such as “Public health”, “The public is a service, private profit”, “Rueda attends, health is not for sale, here are the people who defend it” and “No, no, no to privatisation” ».
Rueda sees “an electoral calculation” for May
Earlier, in an act in Lalín (Pontevedra), the president of the Xunta, Alfonso Rueda, has maintained that the opposition parties in Galicia only think about health today and they do so by “an electoral calculation” in the face of the elections may municipalities.
