Seville (EFE).- Alauda Ruiz de Azúa (Barakaldo, Bizkaia, 1978) has won the Goya for best new director for “Cinco little wolves”, a story about how one learns to be a mother and how motherhood changes the perception that is has from their own parents.
The Basque director has prevailed over Elena López Riera, nominated for “El agua”: Juan Diego Botto for “En los margins”; Mikel Gurrea for “Suro” and Carlota Pereda for “Cerdita”.
Ruiz de Azúa has thanked his family for educating him in the love of culture, theater, and books. “Aita and love are guilty” and he also thanked his partner and his son Daniel for teaching him that “it is never too late to be enthusiastic,” he said.
Graduated in directing from the ECAM in Madrid, Ruiz de Azúa also studied Audiovisual Communication at the University of the Basque Country and English Philology at Deusto.
He has combined directing personal projects with advertising. “Cinco lobitos”, the first feature of hers and starring Laia Costa, premiered last year in the Panoramas section of the Berlinale.
One year since the premiere in Berlin
Alauda Ruiz de Azúa and Laia Costa, two of tonight’s Goyas -best new director and best leading actress- have indicated as soon as they received their awards that they feel “very happy” and have highlighted the coincidence that today is just a year of its premiere at the Berlin Festival.
“It’s like a perfect cycle”, said the Basque director, who has already turned the page and “is in others, preparing other projects”, while at her side, Laia Costa confessed that she is “very much of signs, of indications” .
«I joined Alauda by a brutal stroke of intuition, I let myself go a bit, but I am especially excited that this recognition is with her, because it was her first film and just one year ago today we premiered in Berlin, which was her first international projection”.
Both defend the “change that was seen in the nominations” regarding the number of options for women and, although it has not been a very feminine record, it is “worth it” for both because “the change that we have seen is hopeful”, they have considered Coast.
“What could happen in a vote escapes me, if a nominee fell by one vote, or two, although it is true that it is true that ‘Alcarrás’ has been a shame”, Ruiz de Azúa pointed out about the vacuum of awards for a film with eleven nominations.
Excited by the award to Telmo Irureta
The Basque director was moved by “the award for Telmo (Irureta)”, the protagonist of “The Rite of Spring”, this year’s revelation actor with cerebral palsy. “He has been very beautiful, exciting and necessary.” And she has added that she would have liked Ramón Barea to have taken the prize from him.
Ruiz de Azúa does not know what he will do with his “cabezón” of a dark brown color and lighter than the statuette of other years, since it has been made with recycled materials. “I will ask my son where we put it, because my house is very small,” he said. Costa has it easier: “All the prizes I win are owned by my parents.”
