Seville (EFE) Spanish cinema.
These are the keys to the Goya 2023, which is being held in Seville for the second time in its history, one of the most competitive editions that is remembered for the high quality of the works in competition and (finally) for increasingly parity growing that is noticeable in the nominations to the great prizes.
The consternation of the eve
The death of film director Carlos Saura just one day before receiving the Goya de Honor will mark this edition of the awards and the speeches of the winners. But this event, which has filled the cinema family with consternation, will not change the expected scheme.
Thus, two of the sons of the Aragonese, also filmmakers Antonio and Anna, will go on stage to read their father’s letter of gratitude to the Academy, which had already awarded him in 1991 as best director for “Ay, Carmela” and as best scriptwriter -together with Rafael Azcona- for this same film. It is still in doubt whether his partner, Eulalia Ramón, who was also going to be collecting the award, will do it.
Golden Bear in Berlin with “Quickly, quickly” (1981), author of masterpieces such as “La caza” (1966), “Cría cuervos” (1976) or “Peppermint Frappé” (1967), the news of the death of Saura has met minutes before the press conference of the actress awarded with the International Goya, the Oscar winner Juliette Binoche.
the favorites
For this year’s awards, the favorites are “Modelo 77”, by Alberto Rodríguez, five times nominated for best director (only with “La isla mínima” -2014- he won ten Goyas out of sixteen nominations), and “As bestas”, by Rodrigo Sorogoyen, winner in 2018 of seven of the thirteen goyas to which he opted with “El reino” (2018).
They are closely followed by «Cinco lobitos», by the newcomer Alauda Ruiz de Azúa, winner of the Malaga Festival, and the winner of the Berlinale «Alcarrás», by Carla Simón, who was Goya for best new director with «Summer 1993 ». The quintuple Pilar Palomero closes with “La maternal”, which, like Simón, was Goya in a new direction with “Las niñas” in 2020.
In the category of best director or director, to the names mentioned for the best film is added that of Carlos Vermut (“Mantícora”), and that of Ruiz de Azúa is subtracted, who will compete as best newcomer.
The topics
Rural life and motherhood, both seen from different angles -all of them intense and painfully close- stand out among the plots of the films that this year have been brought to the public from Spanish screens, many of them already available on some payment platform.
follow the parity
Among the candidates for best new director, the Goyas are also somewhat equal: out of five works, three are by women: the favorite Alauda Ruiz de Azúa, Carlota Pereda (“Cerdita”) and Elena López Riera (“El agua”). .
In addition, Mikel Gurrea (“Suro”) and the actor and playwright Juan Diego Botto, with his directorial debut film “En los márgenes”, with Penélope Cruz, who achieved her 14th nomination, this time as a supporting actress.
The inevitable nominees and some new ones
With Cruz, Carmen Machi (“Cerdita”), Ángela Cervantes (“La Maternal”) and the “favorite” Susi Sánchez for “Cinco lobitos” will compete. And among the men, two actors from “Modelo 77”, Jesús Carroza and Fernando Tejero, and two from “As Bestas”, Luis Zahera and Daniel Anido, as well as the father of the “Five Wolves”, Ramón Barea.
Luis Tosar (“En los márgenes”), Denis Menochet (“As bestas”), Nacho Sánchez (“Mantícora”) and Javier Gutiérrez and Miguel Herrán, both for “Modelo 77” opt for the Goya as protagonists, while the leading actress will appear between Laia Costa (“Five wolves”), Anna Castillo (“Wild Sunflowers”), Vicky Luengo (“Suro”) and Bárbara Lennie (“The crooked lines of God”).
