Campeche (Mexico) (EFE).- The President of Cuba, Miguel Díaz-Canel, said this Saturday upon his arrival in Mexico that with this visit the intentions of both countries to continue strengthening bilateral relations are ratified.
“We come to ratify the will of our people and our Government to continue strengthening and deepening relations with Mexico, but not as a formal act, but as an expression of the brotherhood that unites us,” said the Cuban president a few minutes after getting off the plane in Campeche, located in the Gulf of Mexico.
The president recounted on his fourth trip to Mexico that he is happy to return to meet his “friends” and share a few hours with the Mexican president, Andrés Manuel López Obrador.
During his speech, which lasted just a few minutes, he also expressed his gratitude to the country that gave “home, inspiration, strength and life” to Fidel Castro and Ernesto “Che” Guevara, who left Mexico in 1956 on the Granma yacht to start the armed struggle that triumphed in January 1959 with the fall of the dictatorship of Fulgencio Batista.
“We come to return in person the hug we received in difficult times along with material help and technical advice in vital areas and activities from the Mexican government,” added Díaz-Canel, referring to Hurricane Ian, which left two dead in the country. last september.
Díaz-Canel and the current situation
The Cuban president said that the current relationship between Mexico and Cuba managed to materialize various programs and actions “of mutual benefit”, such as the sending of health specialists.
“In less than a year we are complying with what was agreed and there are results to show,” said the president, referring to the more than 500 health professionals who provide services in Mexico as part of a health agreement signed between both governments.
The presence of hundreds of Cuban doctors in hospitals in the Mexican capital, contracted to combat the covid-19 pandemic, aroused controversy in the country in 2020 due to their costs and the activities they carried out.
For his part, López Obrador said that Díaz-Canel is a “distinguished, admired, and fraternal guest.”
