Las Palmas de Gran Canaria (EFE).- The Ministry of Transport has confirmed this Thursday its plans to privatize the management of the control towers of the airports of Gran Canaria, Tenerife Sur and Tenerife Norte-La Laguna, the only ones on the islands that this service was maintained under a public management model.
In a statement, the Ministry explains that it has published the project on its website and has enabled a period of 20 business days for citizens, organizations and other social agents to present allegations and comments on the text with which it seeks to “continue with the opening of the air control service to private providers, as requested by the airport manager”.
Remember that this is a measure “claimed by the Airlines Association (ALA) and by the International Air Transport Association (IATA) on various occasions, and recommended by the European Commission and the National Commission for Markets and Competition”
In this process, Aena will be able to tender the air traffic services of the towers of the following airports: Bilbao, Gran Canaria, Málaga-Costa del Sol, Palma de Mallorca, Santiago-Rosalía de Castro, Tenerife Norte-Ciudad de La Laguna and Tenerife South.
“The objective is to improve the competitiveness of our airports, maintaining optimal levels of quality and safety and, ultimately, benefiting air transport users,” adds the Ministry.
The control towers at the airports of Lanzarote, Fuerteventura, La Palma and El Hierro have already been privately managed for some time. EFE
