New York, Feb 7 (EFE).- The Oscar-winning film “La La Land” (2016) is being adapted for the theater and will become a Broadway musical, according to the announcement by the entertainment company Lionsgate and one of its producers, Marc Platt .
“I am delighted to be joining Lionsgate and the incredible team behind ‘La La Land’ to adapt the film for the Broadway stage, the next exciting episode in its evolution,” Platt said in a press release.
The musical already has prestigious names: the direction by Bartlett Sher (Tony Award), the script written by Ayad Akhtar (Pulitzer) and Matthew Decker, the music composed by Justin Hurwitz (Oscar) and the lyrics by Benj Pasek and Justin Paul (Oscar and Tony).
Six Oscars for “La La Land”
The film, directed by Damien Chazelle, starring Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone as a jazz musician and an aspiring actress pursuing their dreams in Los Angeles, became a cultural phenomenon.
Winner of six Oscars and remembered for songs like “City of Stars”, the year after its premiere it was adapted to a concert format that has been on an international tour for six years now.
Although the cast of the musical is not yet known, the Broadway adaptation of “La La Land” seems like a safe bet for Lionsgate given the film’s impact on Hollywood and the credentials of the team that brings it to the stage.
Since the covid-19 pandemic forced the theater area of New York to close for months, the sector has had a hard time raising its head and even some of the longest-running or award-winning productions have problems staying on the bill, although others such as The Lion King or Chicago have accomplished the feat of staying on stage for more than two decades.
