Bogotá (EFE).- The call for the eleventh Gabo Prize for journalism opened this Tuesday in the categories of Text, Image, Audio, Photography and Audio and will be valid until March 22, the organizers reported.
The Gabo Foundation detailed in a statement that “the contesting works must have been originally published in Spanish or Portuguese between June 7, 2022 and March 21, 2023.”
The information added that the Gabo Award, which this year has the motto “Journalism lives”, aims to “recognize and highlight” the work that Ibero-American communicators do and that “makes its way in the face of threats, attacks and questioning”. .
«At a time when disinformation campaigns and accusations against journalists contribute to the weakening of democracy in Latin America, the Foundation created by Gabriel García Márquez 28 years ago wants to claim the right to freedom of expression and access to information. information, and contribute to the construction of an active citizenship”, added the organization.

For the 2023 edition, the Gabo Award will return to the “finalist instance” in each category, which will include three works from which the winner will receive the award during the Gabo 2023 Festival, to be held from June 30 to 2. July in Bogota.
The contestants will be evaluated by “an international jury made up of renowned journalists” and “after two rounds of evaluation, the jury will choose 10 nominees per category, and among them, the three finalists and the winner of each one.”
«The jury will take into account essential aspects such as innovation and originality in the way of telling stories and approaching audiences, narrative quality and rigor in the treatment of facts, own research to unravel hidden facts or understand complex processes, and the independence and ethical values reflected in the pieces, as well as the impact achieved after the publication of the work,” added the information.
The finalists of the five categories will be invited to the Gabo Festival and will receive a prize of eight million Colombian pesos (about $1,637), while the winners will receive 35 million Colombian pesos (about $7,300), an accreditation diploma and a copy of the sculpture “Gabriel”, created by the Colombian artist Antonio Caro.
Since its creation in 2013, the Gabo Award has received 13,755 applications and has awarded more than 60 works from 34 countries, including those exalted with the Excellence Awards and Clemente Manuel Zabala.
