Santiago de Compostela, Jan 22 (EFE).- Joan Peñarroya, coach of Cazoo Baskonia, blamed his team’s defeat against Monbus Obradoiro on the poor defensive performance they showed in the last three quarters of the match, in which they conceded 80 points.
“After a first quarter in which we were solid, and since you have to be there to compete at the first level, if they then score 24, 26 and 30 points in the other three quarters, it’s very difficult to beat anyone. From the first quarter we stopped being consistent in our defense. The 80 points that we conceded in the last three quarters were decisive, ”he stated.
In his appearance before journalists, he admitted that Obradoiro also “punished” his team with the rebound at some “important” moments of the game, although for him the worst was in defensive performance.
“It is a difficult moment for us. Obviously defeats do not feel good, and there what you have to do is come together more. We have to keep working, insist”, commented the Catalan coach.
Despite the defeat, he asked the fans of the Vitoria team to “continue trusting” in his team because he said he was convinced that he would “show his face” in the remainder of the season.
“We are living too much in the past, and the past only serves to have a better future. We finished the first round with four defeats, which is not bad, but we can’t think about the future”, indicated Peñarroya, who avoided answering if they are looking for a replacement for the injured Pierriá Henry in the market.
“Without Henry and Tadas -Sedekerskis- we also have to compete well and try to beat whoever it is by doing our best basketball. It is clear that in the base position we are a bit lame, but we already started the season like this, ”he recalled.
